Take a journey into the natural world at the recently completed Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre.
Located near Australia's most breathtaking region, the Pinnacles Desert, where thousands of massive limestone pillars rise from the shifting yellow sands, the Discovery Centre adds new dimensions to visitors' journeys through Nambung National Park, which stretches along the Turquoise Coast.
The park boasts beautiful beaches, coastal dunes, shady thuar groves and lowland heathland, where plants that produce bright flowers grow from August to October.
The centre is the starting point for the park, with a hiking trail and an interpretation centre that encourages you to use all your senses to discover the hidden wonders and signs of life in the desert. Often, it's not the landscape features that fascinate you but the contrast of the spaces. It certainly takes time to adapt to the new environment and see the Pinnacles landscape from a different angle.
Designed by John Nicklos, the project architect for Woodhead International, who also designed the Karijini Visitor Centre, Pinnacles Desert Discovery was conceived in response to the landscape and keeps a close connection to it, allowing those who visit to feel at home.
The building materials reflect the region: the self-supporting limestone walls are inspired by the Pinnacles Mountains. At the same time, the vertical timber beams are made of tuff, mimicking the northern forests engulfed by shifting sands. The undersides of these tuff beams were deliberately burned to show the importance of fire in shaping this landscape. The burnt wood is engraved with the words Nyong'ar, provided by the Yude people, echoing their close connection to their land and the use of fire to manage and live in harmony with it. The grey roof that spills over the front and back walls of the centre echoes the ashy laurel forest that stretches across the coastal marshes, creating a dark, sheltered and mysterious world.
